Are Aches And Pains Causing Your Insomnia?

It took me a long time to figure out that the aches and pains that bother me during the day distract me from good sleep. In my case, it’s usually my neck and shoulders, but my lower back flares up sometimes too. And all of these back ache symptoms cause me to toss and turn.

In my case, I don’t usually have a problem going to sleep or waking up during the night and not being able to go back to sleep, but I often toss and turn. I tried a new pillow — which helped — and a variety of other natural cures for insomnia, but nothing seemed to help.

The solution to my sleepless nights is still a work in progress. I’ve been taking Aleve or Tylenol before bed — both inexpensive solutions — and the pain stays at bay most or all of the night. But of course, this isn’t really a solution. I’m just masking the symptoms. Still, I’m getting some relief and sleeping better.

In the future, I need to find a way to get rid of the pain altogether. Since stress is one of the things that contributes to my pain, I know that relaxation techniques, meditation and other things to put me in the right frame of mind for sleep will help me reduce my symptoms. And I want to get to the point that I don’t have to take a pain reliever every night to sleep well. Who knows how much damage to my body these pain relievers are doing.

Maybe aches and pains aren’t what’s contributing to your inability to sleep at night, but all problems have a cause. It took me months to realize that pain is the contributing cause that’s making my nights miserable and my mornings less than bright.

Try some natural cures for insomnia, try some medication if you like — and keep trying things until you find a solution. You deserve a good night’s sleep, and there’s a way to get it.
